Review: Food Network Nighttime App

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

Our second review for the Tech Foodies out there (first one was the Recipe Apps, that you can find here) is for the Food Network Nighttime App. This app can be downloaded for free on the iTunes store here.

When you first launch the app, it searches for the network, hence you need to be connected to either Wi-Fi or the phone carrier. If you don’t have either, the app will automatically close. The app will either launch quickly or take a bit depending on the Wi-Fi or the carrier’s reception strength. After it launches, you get to the app’s home screen: Network Shows. There, you see the list for the Nighttime shows like Ace of Cakes, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, The Next Food Network Star, Throwdown with Bobby Flay… you get the idea. This list of shows will vary depending on the season.

On the bottom (your navigation) you’ll see the Food Network Shows, Photos, Recipes, On TV and More. the More option includes: Most Viewed, Latest Viewed, Highest Rated, Search, Favorites, Share App, Send Feedback and About. There are no preferences to tweak like on other apps. This application, is not intended to be a small recipe book, but an aid to the Food Network shows. You can browse for each show, videos and pictures, pick favorite videos and tag them as such. You can also share your favorites by email.

For the recipe side of the application, you can search for recipes too. For that, go to “More> Search”. I did a quick search for Red Velvet Cupcakes, knowing that online there’s a recipe by Paula Deen. In fact, I did find three recipes, including the Paula Deen one. Couple of things I couldn’t do though, was mark the recipes as favorites and make a grocery shopping list from the recipes, both can be done on other recipe apps. For that, we give the Food Network Nighttime app 3 out of 5 forks!
