Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

This Baked Sweet Potato Fries recipe is a variation to a potato french fry side dish. It’s made out of sweet potatoes which gives it a sweeter taste, and they are cooked by the method of baking, which makes it a healthy dish. The versatility of sweet potatoes lets you choose between a sweet sice mix, spicy, or salty spice mix. I had to cut these by hand, using my trusty knife. I was not able to cut them using my mandolin, I suppose sweet potatoes are much harder than potatoes…or my mandolin isn’t too sharp. It’s not hard to cut them by hand, just slice them vertically and then cut strips out of each slice. It may actually be safer doing it this way than using the mandolin.

You can cut these up into thin strips, thick wedges, or rounds. It’s up to you. The baking times are approximate; it depends on how thick you cut the wedges or rounds of sweet potatoes. Try to cut them evenly so they all cook at about the same rate. For best browning results bake only one sheet at a time. Why the sugar? To help with the caramelization and to intensify the sweetness of the fries, but you can easily leave it out if you want.

Oven  Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Serves 4-6 (as a side dish)
Recipe from Elise Bauer

Ingredients:
2 pounds sweet potatoes (3 large potatoes)
¼ cup olive oil
1-2 tablespoons  sugar
1 tablespoon salt
½ tablespoon spice combination*

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F, Peel and cut off the ends of the potatoes.
  2. Cut the potatoes lengthwise in half. Cut each piece into wedges. If you have a mandolin, you can slice the sweet potatoes into disks.
  3. Place the sweet potatoes into a bowl and cover with oil. Mix well to combine.
  4. Sprinkle the potatoes with salt, sugar and spice mix. Make sure that all pieces are coated with both oil and spices.
  5. Spread the sweet potatoes out in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove the baking sheet from the oven and turn over all pieces.
  7. Return to the oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until they are well browned. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes:

  • You can use a combination of chipotle powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, pumpkin pie spice, garam masala, Cajun seasoning… you get the idea.

Hi! I’m so glad you like the sweet potato fries recipe enough to write about it here on your website. And thank you for crediting me with a link. Would you do me the favor of writing the recipe in your own words, not just copying and pasting mine? Google penalizes sites when it sees duplicate content making it more difficult for both of our sites’ content to be found. Thanks in advance!

Hi Elise! Thanks so much for the note. We updated the wording on the recipe! This was way back on our early days and didn’t quite understand how the search engines worked. Now we do, and we are already updating all of the recipes. And… If you ever need this recipe in spanish, we also translated the fixed recipe! :)
