Chocolate Puff Pastries with Berry Sauce

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

We recently published our strawberry galette recipe, which uses store bought puff pastry. Here’s another quick recipe you can try which is even easier to prepare. They are chocolate puff pastries:  just roll out the pastry, make squares, top with chocolate, top with another pastry square and bake. A little dusting of confectioner’s sugar and you’re done!  I decided to make a quick berry sauce for this since these tend to be a little dry, the added sauce was a good choice.

For the sauce, I grabbed some jelly I had in my fridge… added a little water to thin it out and heated it.  Voila! Express berry sauce.  You can make a strawberry coulis, in fact… I encourage you to make it and not use my shameful jelly sauce.  I used that because I was too lazy to make it that day, so I’m including the recipe for proper berry sauce at the bottom of this post.

I prefer the taste of semi-sweet chocolate, and I used chocolate chips because that’s what I had. You can use chocolate squares, or milk chocolate if you prefer.  White chocolate could probably work as well, but personally… I’m not crazy about it.  (I only like it in cheesecake). Whatever kind you choose, this is perfect for a quick and pretty dessert to share with your family and friends.  They’ll think you spent hours in the kitchen 😉

Chocolate Puff Pastries with Berry Sauce

A The Foodies’ Kitchen Recipe
Yields about 18 squares

For Pastries:
1 lb puff pastry
Semisweet chocolate chips
1 egg, for the glaze
confectioner’s sugar

For berry sauce:
1 cup berry jelly (strawberry, currant, or whatever you prefer)
1/4  cup water

Preparation, for pastries:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F
  2. Roll out pastry dough into a thin rectangle. Using a pizza cutter, divide the rectangle into equally sized squares.
  3. Using only half of the squares: place chocolate chips in the middle of each square, leaving the sides uncovered.
  4. Using the other half of the squares: Top each chocolate covered square with another square, and press down sides with a fork.
  5. In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water.  Brush each square with this glaze.
  6. Bake for 30-40 min or until pastry is golden brown. (if your puff pastry comes with baking time instructions, use those)

For Berry Sauce:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine jelly and water. Heat and whisk until it well combined and has the consistency of syrup.

Assembly:

  1. Spoon some of the sauce onto a plate.  Dust the pastries with confectioner’s sugar and place two of them on top of the sauce. Serve immediately.
