Foodies’ Halloween Special 2013

This year we are sharing our recipes from 2013 and our best recipes from our previous year. As we are translating many of our recipes, we want to share the ones we’ve posted before for all of you, in both Spanish and English. We are sharing from appetizers, to soup, drinks, classic sugar cookies and even caramel apples… just like the ones from Snow White’s evil queen, and quick desserts like our MilkyWay cupcakes that can be prepared with store bought chocolates.

Also, we are sharing a set of downloadable freebies to make your Halloween set up feel more Halloweeney!

Foodies Freebie: September 2013 Wallpaper Collection

On September 15th we celebrate Guatemala’s independence day, and to honor our beautiful country with our desktops, we are sharing our September 2013 Wallpaper Collection featuring these colorful worry dolls, and the bags that you get them in. Don’t know what Worry Dolls are? Well, let us tell you!

Worry Dolls (or muñecas quitapenas), are very small and colorful dolls, and usually are given as presents as a family of 6 dolls per pack. The ones pictured on our calendar are a slightly bigger version, but sold under the same name. If you find yourself not being able to sleep, you tell your worries to the dolls and place them under your pillow before bed. By the next morning, all your worries are gone. The legends also say that you can exhibit the dolls in your house after the troubles go away, since that’s how the elderly would prove how many worries the dolls had taken away from them… showing at the same time the number of happiness was regained with the help of the dolls. There’s a catch though, you can’t share your worries with anybody else or the dolls won’t be able to take the problems away.

The dolls are made by artisans in the Guatemalan highlands, most of them in Chimaltenango. Weekly, it is thought that a family making and selling the dolls, can sell over 400 doll families, making it 2400 potential worries taken away.

We hope you enjoy our wallpapers featuring a little slice of Guatemala’s folklore!

Foodies Freebie: August 2013 Wallpaper Collection

August looks like tomatoes… and onions… and bell peppers. This wallpaper, is wham! and bright, but we are absolutely loving it. This year we made a promise to you, our lovely readers and to ourselves: we would be posting more healthy recipes, and the wallpapers are no exception. Notice that we haven’t posted a single dessert on your desktops? We want to post some good-looking desserts, but we seem to find healthier and amazing pictures on our every day cooking adventures instead.

Helga’s little girl, is asking more and more to be involved in the kitchen cooking both sweet and savory dishes, and she absolutely adores it! Specially after seeing all the videos from Everyday Food with Sarah Carey. Kristen watches the videos diligently, and even after we tell her that there’s a new one (from our Facebook feed), she often has seen them already. She even plays that she is recording kitchen videos and telling us how to make deserts. At 4, that is an accomplishment… specially since she narrates the video in english!

Ok, back to the wallpaper collection, this recipe will be up later this month, but we can tell you that these roasted vegetables are just plain amazing. Since in Guatemala we are going through our rainy season, often we find ourselves craving for dishes that are more warm and hearty. If you want to change-up your summer salad for something equally delicious and but even tastier, try roasting your vegetables. We’ve found that roasted tomatoes, onions, bell peppers and broccoli are a pleasant taste buds surprise on the table. You can serve them as a veggie side dish to chicken (our weekday protein).

We hope this wallpaper inspires you to eat more veggies and fruits (did you know that tomato is a fruit?) throughout August!

Foodies Freebie: July 2013 Wallpaper Collection

How fast is this year flying by? We’ve definitely had a busy month. Kristen was enjoying her mid-year vacations, so that kept Helga busy, and for myself, I’ve been swamped with work and also celebrating my grandmother’s 91th birthday, as I shared with you over Instagram and Facebook. And, by the way, thanks for all the follows and likes on Instagram! We are loving how this little app allows us to share everyday bits with you. In case you are not following us yet, you can find us as twofoodies over at Instagram. Now, down to business: today we share our July 2013 Wallpaper Collection.

This picture is well, old… But has a great story and plenty of good memories attached to it. I went to a photography workshop in Brooklyn, NY back in 2009 called “Brooklyn Cooking”. The workshop was by Chris Marquardt from Tips from The Top Floor podcast and Chef Mark Tafoya of The Gilded Fork. The cooking side was under the guidance of Chef Mark and the photography side, was looked over by Chris. I was in the photography side of the workshop, so I didn’t get to cook, but boy was it fun! I loved every second of it! Thanks to both Mark and Chris for making it great. Now, back to the picture, this was just part of a great set of pictures I was able to take under the guidance of Chris. If you love photography, listen to his podcast, we highly recommend it. And if you ever find yourself in need of a Personal Chef Service for a very special occasion, contact Mark. He prepared the most delicious dishes throughout the workshops, along with the cooking side attendees… Or should I say sous chefs?

And now, a little Public Service Announcement. As you know, Google Reader is closing it’s doors. For those who are not familiar with Google Reader, it was an RSS feed handler that could do it all: you could use it alone or integrate it to your favorite RSS feed app. Now, since it’s not going to keep on running, you can move all your feeds to Feedly.com or BlogLovin’. I made the switch to Feedly over a month and I am loving it! Both services are free. Move your feeds and you won’t loose a post from us or your favorite blogs!

We hope you enjoy the desktops as much as we do, and as we announced a few days ago, now you can download it calendar-free for your desktop or laptop too!
