This Puff Pastry Dessert is the perfect choice if you are looking for something easy and fast to prepare. Maybe you have friends coming over for coffee, or you want to end a special meal with a light dessert that looks pretty on the plate.

Strawberry Puff Pastry Dessert

You only need to go out and buy Puff Pastry dough (I get mine at Pastelería Ciro), strawberries, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. This is so easy to make, I let my daughter help out with most of it. Kids love to roll out dough, so you can make it an activity to do with them. Don’t skip on the balsamic vinegar, its combination with strawberries will enhance your dessert.  If you don’t have balsamic vinegar at hand, you can use orange or lemon juice in its place.

Recipe from Everyday Food
Yields 4-6

Shell Ingredients:
1 lb puff pastry dough, thawed
1 large egg, lightly beaten
Sugar, for sprinkling

Filling Ingredients:
3 cups strawberries sliced
2 to 3 tablespoons sugar or honey
2 to 3 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
Pinch of salt
whipped cream

Procedure:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Roll out the thawed puff pastry dough on a flowered surface to 1/4 inch thickness, and cut into 4- 6 squares. With a paring knife, lightly score a border 3/4 inch from edges. Brush border with egg and sprinkle with sugar.
  3. Freeze 10 minutes.
  4. Bake until puffed and golden, about 15 minutes. Let cool. Gently press center to flatten. That is where the fruit will go.
  5. Meanwhile, combine fruit, sugar, balsamic vinegar, and salt. Let stand 10 minutes. Fill shells with ice cream or whipped cream (or both!) and top with fruit mixture. Serve immediately.
