Little Foodies: Snake Sandwich

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

Little Foodies was on location at Siman’s Playground (at Pradera Concepción) to bring you an awesome idea for a birthday party, or family get together: A fun Snake Sandwich.

To make it, it is important to use a baguette bread, as those are long and thin. To fill it, you can prepare it with your favorite ingredients. We chose the basic ham and cheese fillings, but you can use chicken, or roast beef, different types of sliced cheese, sliced onions or even sliced cucumber. Whatever you like best!

We recommend that you spread the mayonnaise on the top half of the baguette only, so the bottom half that has all the ingredients on it doesn’t get soggy. To give it a special touch, we made a basil mayonnaise; you will find the directions at the bottom of the recipe so you can make it at home.

Our chef is wearing a blouse from Almacenes Siman, where we also found a fun colorful set of knives, colored cutting boards, and a set of 4 small bowls from the one and only Cake Boss!

Snake Sandwich

Recipe adapted from Pillsbury
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients:
1 baguette loaf
2-3 tablespoons of basil mayonnaise, or regular mayonnaise
5-6 escarole lettuce leaves
8-10 slices of turkey ham
8-10 tomato slices
6-8 slices of cheese
2 small pimiento-stuffed olives
Roasted canned red bell pepper (1 long strip)
2 toothpicks

Directions:

  1. Cut bread in half horizontally.
  2. Layer lettuce slices along the bottom half of the baguette.
  3. Repeat with turkey, then cheese, and finally tomato slices.
  4. Spread the top half of the baguette with the basil mayonnaise, or regular mayonnaise.
  5. To make the snake eyes: Insert the toothpicks on the bread to mark the position of the eyes.  Then place an olive on each toothpick.
  6. Cut 1 long strip of roasted red bell pepper to resemble a snake’s tongue . Insert into tip of the bread.
  7. To serve, cut crosswise into 6 pieces and try to arrange the slices so it looks like a slithering snake.

For the basil mayonnaise:

  • In a blender, mix ½ cup of mayonnaise with 8 fresh basil leaves, 1 teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of lime juice. Blend it all up until it is well incorporated, and keep in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
