Little Foodies: Fairy Bread Sandwiches

Fairy Sandwiches, the name alone makes any small child curious about them. They are a great little treat for them to take in their lunch box, and they are perfect to serve at a themed birthday party or a special afternoon snack. They are very easy to prepare and if you are letting the kids make them, they can choose the cookie-cutter mold they like to make the window on their slice of bread, and choose the sprinkles and spread they prefer.

Good options to hold the sprinkles in place are Nutella, cream cheese, jam, peanut butter, any chocolate or cookie spread, or even butter. In our experience, these sandwiches work best with white bread. Whole wheat tends to fall apart, and the shapes don’t come out as neat.

If they are smaller, you can help them out by cutting off the sandwich slice edges. We recommend that you cut off two slices at once, setting one on top of the other, so you get even slices.  Also, set little bowls with the spreads they can use, as well as a variety of sprinkles. The best are multicolored nonpareils!

In Australia and New Zealand, this is a very common snack for children.  The original version is called Fairy Bread and it consists of bread slices spread with butter and topped with sprinkles. They are cut into triangle shapes.

We loved the cookie cutters we found at Almacenes Siman Guatemala, as well the colorful cutting board and the sky blue dishes. There are so many great things you can find that can brighten up your table.

Fairy Sandwiches

Makes: 4 sandwiches
Adapted from different pins

Ingredients:
8 slices of white bread
½ cup of multicolored sprinkles, or chocolate shavings
Spread of your choice: cream cheese, Nutella, jam,
peanut butter, any chocolate or cookie spread
small cookie cutters

Procedure:

  1. Cut of the crusts from the sandwich slices.
  2. Spread a layer of the desired spread on one side of 4 slices of bread.
  3. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the other 4 slices. Place the cookie cutter in the middle of the slice, to cut out the shape.
  4. Place the uncut slices, spread side up, on a plate, cutting board or over a bowl to catch excess sprinkles. Cover with sprinkles, especially in the middle.
  5. Top with the cut-out slices, and slightly press into place.
