Pasta with tomato sauce is one of those basic dishes that all children like, it is easy to prepare and satisfies their appetite. But we were not going to share a basic recipe for spaghetti with tomato sauce, in this post we will show you how to prepare colorful rainbow pasta!

Colorful Rainbow Pasta

You can use any variety of pasta such as spaghetti, linguine, bow ties, etc. All you need is vegetable coloring, water, and reusable Ziploc bags where they can mix the pasta with the coloring. You can do it in as many colors as you want. Just divide the pasta into equal portions to each color that you are going to use. You can make it multicolored, or a single color.  Use green food coloring to make Hulk pasta, for example. It can be dyed pink or lilac with an Alfredo sauce and corn kernels as a topping, and you can serve unicorn pasta!

We like children to participate in the preparation of the recipes, and in this case, they can help to color their pasta. You just have to instruct them to move the pasta around in the closed bag with their hands but be careful not to squeeze it too hard.

To serve it, you can top it with your favorite pasta sauce, or just mix with olive oil and a generous sprinkling of parmesan cheese.

Colorful Rainbow Pasta

At Almacenes Siman, we found a beautiful colander, a mini mason jar to sprinkle parmesan cheese, which we love. They always have a wide variety of placemats and dishes available and you can choose some suitable for children like this one made from melamine. We always find decorative details that give a special flair to the dining table, like this little pot with a succulent.

We would love to know if you try to make this recipe!

Yields 2-4 portions

Ingredients:

250 gms pasta
food coloring
water
re-usable Ziploc bags

Favorite pasta sauce
Parmesan cheese

Procedure:

  1. Choose your pasta variety and cook al dente, according to package directions and strain. Do not add any oil or butter to it at this point, or the color will not set. You can leave it in a bowl with a bit of cold water to avoid it from sticking.
  2. You’ll need one reusable bag for each color of pasta you want to make. Add two tablespoons of warm water to each bag and add about 20 drops of food coloring to the water. Check on the food coloring box for color mixtures, for example, if you need to make purple use 18 drops of red and 2 of blue.
  3. When you are ready to use your pasta and if you left it with a little cool water, strain it. Divide into equal portions and put the strained noodles into the bags and mix the colored water all-around using your hands. Be mindful not to squeeze the pasta too hard. Let it soak up the colors for 3-5 minutes.
  4. Strain each bag individually, and rinse with cold water to remove excess food coloring.
  5. Set each color into a bowl, making sure to strain off all the excess liquid. Then use your hands to mix all the colors together.
  6. Serve with your favorite sauce and enjoy!
