Happy Hour: The Old Fashioned

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

One of the oldest cocktails in the book is The Old Fashioned, it can be prepared with bourbon type whiskey, or single malt whisky, which is how we prepared it. It is basically simple syrup, your choice of whiskey, drops of Angostura bitters and it is served very cold, but with little ice. Since the ingredient that stands out is whiskey it is important to use a premium product like The Singleton 12.

This single malt whiskey is easy to drink, medium-bodied with notes of brown sugar, baked apples, and creamy toffee. On the nose, we find vanilla, wood, and fruit notes.

To assemble the Old Fashioned you can use a sugar cube for each drink, which is muddled with a few drops of Angostura bitters. Personally, we prefer to use simple syrup to avoid undiluted crystals remaining in our drink, resulting in a sweeter taste at the end.

The final touch is a strip of orange or lemon peel that we squeeze over the glass to leave a soft citrus aroma. You can heat the peel for a few seconds by lighting a match to give a smoky note to the oils, and after squeezing it, let the peel fall into the cocktail. Make sure you have your citrus peel ready when you start making your drink.

You can find The Singleton 12 and Angostura bitters at Vinoteca Stores.

The Old Fashioned

Serves: 1 drink
Recipe from The Foodies’ Kitchen

Ingredients:
1.5 oz single malt whiskey The Singleton 12
¼ oz simple sugar syrup
3-4 dashes angostura bitters
ice, large cubes
Orange or lemon peel

  1. In a whiskey glass, pour the sugar simple syrup, the Angostura bitters, and the whiskey.
  2. Add ice and with a bar spoon stir the ice in a circular motion about 15 times so that the drink begins to dilute and chill.
  3. Press your slice of peel between your fingers to squeeze its oils over the glass, and drop it into the drink. Optionally, you can heat the peel with the flame of a match before squeezing, this will give it a different smoky flavor profile.
