Single Malt Scotch Whisky Brownies

There are certain food combinations that are known for being a perfect match, such as champagne and strawberries or caramel and sea salt. But have you tried whisky and chocolate?

We love the combination, and you can vary the type of chocolate depending on the type of whisky you are pairing it with. We chose The Singleton Single Malt Whisky for our chocolate pairing, it has Orange zest spiciness with a malty core of nuts, oak, and toffee. It pairs deliciously well with dark chocolate, so we are sharing our recipe which includes fresh orange zest in the mix with a mixture of cocoa and chopped semi-sweet chocolate, as well as 2 oz of The Singleton itself which added an extraordinary flavor!

Our tip for this recipe is to make sure you use parchment paper to cover all sides of the pan. We used only one sheet of parchment to cover two sides, although they did not stick it would have been effortless with two sheets. Add baking or cooking spray on top as well. Just a little.

We also recommend you let the brownies cool completely before cutting them, so you get even squares. You can even put them in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes, so they firm up better and you get cleaner cuts. These are so fudgy you may need to clean your knife with warm water between cuts to get neat borders.

This is one of our favorite brownie recipes, so far. And we have made quite a few.
Their texture is fudgy, with rich chocolate flavor subtle orange notes, and a depth of flavor from the whisky.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky Brownies

Makes 9 servings
Recipe from Broma Bakery

Ingredients:
½ cup unsalted butter
1 ½ cups sugar
4 oz. bittersweet chocolate, chopped
2 eggs
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
¼ cup all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon of salt
zest of ½ an orange
¼ cup Singleton Single Malt Scotch Whisky (2 oz)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line an 8″×8″ pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides to easily remove the brownies from the pan.
  2. In a double boiler, mix the butter and sugar over medium heat until the butter is melted completely. Add the chopped chocolate and mix until it has melted and incorporated completely. You can also use a large microwave-safe bowl, and microwave the butter and sugar on high until the butter is melted completely 30-60 seconds. Add chopped chocolate and microwave for 15 seconds more, until chocolate is melted completely.
  3. Using a stand or a hand mixer, add the eggs to the melted chocolate, and beat for 1 minute until the color of the batter lightens.
  4. Mix the cocoa powder, flour, salt, Scotch Whisky, and orange zest until combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 mins, or until a knife inserted in the center of the brownies comes out mostly clean.
  6. Allow to cool before cutting into squares and serve!
