We made this dessert for the spooky season… it’s the Rice Krispies treats recipe you already know, but we added red food coloring to make it look like mystery ground meat. We added candy eyes to the patties, and of course, we couldn’t forget the blood. We made that with corn syrup and a few drops of red food coloring.

To present them, we placed them on biodegradable trays, and you can cover them with plastic wrap to make them look like the ground beef trays you’d find at the grocery store.

This dessert tastes exactly like Rice Krispies treats, but with a horrifying look!

Mystery Meat Treats

Makes 4-5 servings

Ingredients:
5 cups of rice Krispies cereal
6 tbsp unsalted butter
6 cups mini marshmallows
Red food coloring
Corn syrup
Biodegradable trays for presentation

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, add the corn syrup and drops of red food coloring until you get the desired color. Using a pastry brush or spoon, make a design on the biodegradable trays to resemble blood. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add the 5 cups of cereal and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, add the butter and, once melted, add the marshmallows and drops of red food coloring until you get the desired color. Stir constantly until they are completely melted and there are no lumps.
  4. Add the mixture to the cereal and mix with a spatula until fully incorporated.
  5. Using your hands, form patties and place them on the trays. Add more corn syrup on top to decorate, and the final touch is given by pressing on candy eyes.  Enjoy!
