Asian Style Beef and Rice Bowls

This Asian-style beef bowl is one of those weeknight meals that checks every box: fast, flavorful, and endlessly satisfying. Savory ground beef is cooked with garlic, ginger, and a glossy soy-sesame sauce that hits that perfect balance of sweet, salty, and just a little tangy. Served over fluffy white rice, it becomes the kind of comforting bowl you’ll want on repeat, the type that feels takeout-inspired but totally doable at home.

What makes it so delicious is the contrast of textures and colors in every bite. Crisp red cabbage lightly massaged with vinegar, fresh julienned carrots, and tender green beans bring brightness and crunch to the rich beef and rice. It’s a bowl that feels balanced and vibrant, not heavy.

And the best part? You can prep the components ahead of time and let everyone build their own, exactly how they like it. A sprinkle of sesame seeds and sliced green onions on top, and the meal is officially handled.

Note: by massaging the raw cabbage, we make it more tender, and we give it a little more flavor. Just season with salt to taste and add a few dashes of vinegar and a little olive oil. Massage with your hands for a couple of minutes and that’s it.

Asian Style Beef and Rice Bowls

Yields 4 servings

Ingredients, for the beef:
2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil or neutral oil
2 lbs ground beef
4 spring onions, finely sliced, reserve some green slices for garnish
Salt and pepper, to taste

Ingredients, for the Stir Fry Sauce:
2 garlic cloves, finely minced
2 tsp freshly grated ginger
6 tbsp low sodium soy sauce
4 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tsp rice vinegar
1-2 tsp hot sauce of choice, optional (sriracha, chili flakes, or chili oil)

Ingredients, for serving:
Seasame seeds, for garnish
white rice
shredded red cabbage, massaged with a little salt, vinegar and oil
julienned carrots
steamed green beans

Directions:

  1. For the sauce, in a small bowl, whisk together the stir fry sauce ingredients. Set aside.
  2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium–high heat. Add the beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Season lightly with salt, since you will add soy sauce later.
  3. Pour in the stir-fry sauce and stir well to coat the beef. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Turn the heat off and stir through the spring onion.
  4. to serve, divide the cooked rice among four bowls. Top with the beef mixture and a generous serving of the prepared red cabbage, carrot and green beans. Drizzle with additional soy sauce, if desired. Garnish with the sliced green onion and sesame seeds. Serve immediately!
