Little Foodies: Popcorn Ball Monsters

These Popcorn Ball Monsters are a very tasty and easy treat, and to make it suitable for Halloween, we’ve added little candy eyes to turn simple popcorn balls into cute monsters.  We used orange and purple sprinkles to give it a little bit of extra color, but you can add any type of sprinkles, mini candy or mini chocolates. We thought about adding mini chocolate chips to it, but since we weren’t sure how that would turn out when we incorporate them into the hot mixture. We decided to stick with the sprinkles to be safe.

Since this recipe requires some stove time, please be present at all times. Depending on the child’s age, it is your decision to let them mix on the stove, or just participate in forming the popcorn balls and adding the eyes. To glue the eyes, we melted a small amount of chocolate and used it to place the candy eyes on the shaped popcorn balls.

Sweet Potato Cupcakes with Toasted Marshmallow Frosting

The end-of-year weather is definitely here. Coats, scarves and sweaters are out of our closets, and the baking days have begun! These Sweet Potato Cupcakes are delicious. We thought that they could come out rubbery, tough… but the exact opposite happened: They are subtlety sweet, moist and light. The toasted marshmallow frosting gives it the right amount of sweet that compliments the spices from the cupcakes perfectly.

We baked and frosted the cupcakes all throughout a morning, and we skipped taking pictures from the directions as we usually do. We were going to guest post with this recipe on a friends’ site, but because of scheduling and content we are moving our post to a very near future and we are sharing it here.

To make up for it, we are giving out a very detailed information on the step by step instructions and a picture styled by Kristen! This is one of the recipes that we knew we had to try out together. We baked these cupcakes all morning (this recipe makes 30 cupcakes!), then frosted and torched them as you will see bellow, and after picking the little sous-chef from school we started a bigger scaled photo shoot. After watching us go through the photo shoot styling, she asked if she could help us as well. She went to get her best toy props and added told us where she wanted the elements to “add color” (her words!). And the end result (in her words), it’s a beeeautiful picture!

Marshmallow & Chocolate Treats

These last couple of days have been playing catch-up for me. After being set back a couple of days, I’ve been working sun-to-sun (or more like sun-to-midnight) and finally starting to make some good dents on my pending task list. Now, I haven’t been able to cook at all…. Until a few days ago. I was itching so bad to do something that I ended up whipping a recipe for Marshmallow & Chocolate Treats. A Foodies’ Original! I thought at first of adding cocoa to the melted marshmallows, but it would get too dried up. Then it came to me. Add an entire bag of chocolate chips. Genius. It should work.

And it did. My dad already had a few bites that same night and some more the next morning. I tried it out later, and it is a perfect mix of marshmallow treats with chocolate bar, not too sweet, with a slight nutty flavor from browning the butter (like I did on the Brown Butter Crispy Treats), rich chocolate with a little espresso powder to bring out more chocolatyness (did I just made up a word?) and a touch of sprinkles just because I can.

You could replace the espresso powder with a little bit of instant coffee or even a bit of cayenne pepper, and maybe add a bit of nuts. Go crazy. Mix and match. then enjoy the fruit of your creativity!
