Little Foodies: Rainbow Grilled Cheese

There are classic comfort foods we enjoy in the colder months, and one of them is the Grilled Cheese Sandwich, which is usually accompanied with a hot soup, usually tomato. You can use different cheeses, such as Mozzarella, Cheddar, or Gruyère, either in sliced or shredded.

For this recipe you will need the cheese to be shredded, because in this version we add vegetable coloring to make it fun for children to eat. You can take advantage of the end of the year festivities to add colors in autumn tones, or closer to Christmas, use alternating red and green.

You don’t need a lot of cheese, and all you have to do is divide what you would use to form a strip of color that covers the length of the bread slice you choose, and add a few drops of the color you like. 3 or 4 drops is enough.

It is important to heat the pan well before you start. When placing the bread on the pan, make sure that the temperature is on medium, so that the bread is browned and does not burn.

At Almacenes Siman, we found the perfect pan to make this recipe at home, its non stick and has a heavy bottom. Also, from the kitchen tools section we got a spiffy spatula – which works great with the heavy bottomed skillet.

Recipe adapted from Pop Sugar
Serves 2

Ingredients:
⅔ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
red food coloring
orange food coloring
yellow food coloring
blue food coloring
white sliced bread
butter, softened

Procedure:

  1. Divide the cheese between 5 bowls and tint each with a different food coloring. Use blue and yellow food coloring to make green.
  2. Heat up a griddle or skillet to medium-high heat. Meanwhile, spread butter on one side of the four pieces of bread.
  3. Place 2 pieces butter-side down on a plate. Top with cheese, making lines with the different colored cheese and cover with the other slice of bread, butter-side up.
  4. Grill for 2 to 3 minutes until cheese has started to melt and bread is toasted. Flip sandwich and grill for another 2 minutes.
  5. Remove sandwich from grill and enjoy warm!
