Happy Hour: Old Fashioned

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

For Father’s Day, surprise Dad by preparing him this delicious cocktail. The Old Fashioned is the classic choice for bourbon lovers, it is simple but sophisticated, with citrus notes, and prepared correctly is a delight for the palate with only 3 ingredients: Bulleit bourbon, angostura bitters, simple syrup (or a sugar cube).

It is a great cocktail to serve before dinner, it is taken slowly and as the ice melts it gradually dilutes the cocktail. It is better to use a large and clear ice cube, or a couple of not-so-small ice cubes, this helps it not dilute too quickly.

Instead of simple syrup, you can use a sugar cube, which should be muddled together with the Angostura bitters. Keep in mind that it is important to dissolve the sugar crystals so that the Old Fashioned is well balanced and you don’t feel the grains at the bottom of the glass. Therefore, we prefer to use simple syrup: equal parts of water and sugar are heated in a small pot until the sugar is dissolved. (it should not come to a boil). Store in the refrigerator and keep for up to 2 weeks.

We chose Bulleit bourbon, which we think is ideal for preparing an Old Fashioned, with its delicate notes of spices and oak. On the palate, the texture is smooth with notes of maple, oak, and nutmeg. The aftertaste is satiny with a delicate caramel flavor. You can find Bulleit bourbon and Angostura bitters at Vinoteca stores. They have an online store with excellent delivery service.

Old Fashioned

Serves 1 cocktail

Ingredients:
1/2 oz simple syrup
2-3 dashes Bitters
2 oz. Bulleit bourbon
1 orange peel

Instructions:

  1. Add the simple syrup and bitters to a lowball glass or a mixing glass.
  2. Fill the glass with ice cubes, add bourbon and stir for 10 seconds until it chills. If you are using a mixing glass to make more than one cocktail at a time, as we did, simply double the recipe. The process is the same.
  3. As a finishing touch, press orange peel to release the oils and gently spray the top of the cocktail with the citrus oils. Garnish with an orange peel.
