Apple Dog Treats

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

You can make homemade treats for your dog at home! All natural and free of preservatives. Apples are a great source of fiber and vitamin C for dogs, providing the natural sweetness they love. We used Washington Fuji apples to make our treats. Make sure the peanut butter is free of the sweetener Xylitol, which is toxic for dogs.

When you mix the ingredients, you will notice the dough is dry and crumbly. Add up to ½ cup of warm water and knead it 3 or 4 times. It will come together. You can add a little bit of the water as you knead and when you roll it make it about ½ inch thick.

Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. We recommend you use larger shapes for larger dogs, and if you are giving the treat to smaller and senior dogs, like our Fiona, you can break them up into smaller pieces so it is easier for them to enjoy.

Once they are baked until golden brown, about 35 minutes, store them in the freezer or refrigerator for a snack your pup will love!

Check with your vet before giving this treat to your dog.

Apple Dog Treats

yields about 25 treats

Ingredients:
1 cup of peeled and diced Fuji Washington apples
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
¾ cup oats
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
2 large eggs, well beaten
3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Line a baking sheet with a Silpat mat or parchment paper.
  2. Place the diced apples in a mixing bowl. Add the flour, oats, salt, and cinnamon to the bowl and mix until combined.
  3. Whisk together the beaten eggs with the peanut butter then add to the apple mixture and mix until combined. The dough will be dry and crumbly so add about ¼ cup of warm water, and mix until it sticks together in a ball. Add a little more water if it’s still too dry.
  4. Working on a floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to ½-inch thickness. Using dog treat cutters, cut out desired shapes, and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Bake until golden brown and crisp, about 30-35 minutes.
  6. Cool completely on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container in the freezer or refrigerator. Let your furry friend enjoy!
