Happy Hour: Tequila Smash

This post is also available in / Esta entrada también está disponible en ESPAÑOL (SPANISH)

This is a fresh and simple way to enjoy quality tequila, with few ingredients, this cocktail resembles a Mojito.  Its citrus and herb flavors make it a great option for hot summer days, and you can easily substitute the mint leaves with spearmint. We have even seen it made with sage leaves, but we have not tried that one ourselves!

The original recipe asks that you tear up the leaves to help them release their flavors, but personally we don’t like bits of torn greens in our drink. The solution is to muddle the whole leaves together with the syrup before adding the rest of the ingredients and shaking it up.

The simple syrup we used here is made with honey, but you can certainly make it using sugar. Honey simple syrup is not at thick as sugar syrup, but it does the job of sweetening our drinks in a more natural way.

We used Don Julio Blanco for our cocktails because of its smooth clean taste which makes it accessible to a wide variety of palates, but you could use reposado tequila for this recipe with great results. You can find both kinds at Vinoteca Stores.

We recently featured another cocktail using tequila, our Pineapple Margarita, you can get the recipe here. Or, if you enjoy tequila straight, you should definitely check out our Tequila & Sangrita post.

Tequila Smash

Serves: 1 drink
Recipe adapted from Short Girl Tall Order

Ingredients:
2 oz Don Julio Blanco Tequilla
¾ oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
¾ oz. honey simple syrup
4-6 mint leaves
ice

Procedure:

  1. If you don’t have it already, make your honey simple syrup by mixing equal parts of honey and water in a small pan. Stir over medium heat until completely mixed, about 1 minute. Let it cool before using. To make a few cocktails you can use ½ cup honey and ½ cup water.
  2. In a cocktail shaker add the mint leaves and simple syrup, use a muddler or the back of your cocktail spoon to press down on the leaves so they release their oil, then add lime juice, and tequila. Shake until combined and chilled for about 20 seconds.
  3. Fill each cocktail glass with ice and pour the cocktail mixture over it. Garnish with fresh lime or lemon and enjoy!
